NC PA Communication Mentors' Office and AT Center Video Tour
With the NC PA Communication Mentors' Office and AT Center, we had an opportunity to expand our AT environment so that we could set up the center to closely resemble someone's daily environment where they might be using AT. This center is set up in a housing development and we're hoping to build on the capacity of the neighborhood / community feel to not only welcome the "neighbors" and have them explore and learn what we have to offer them, but also to create and foster local opportunities for the AT users who come to this center for assessments, tryouts, classes, etc....
Our center is in collaboration with the local Housing Authority and MH/MR office and was an "accessible house" to begin with -- at least physically, that is, and only on the 1st floor -- so adapting it further was really fun just by putting to use a lot of the AT equipment you see on the shelves in the SE PA Communication Mentors' Office and AT Center. We also got to plan out more, design the colorings, furnishings, layout, and decorations for our center to highlight accessibility that anyone can do just by being more aware of things like foreground / background colors, rounded-edged surfaces in traffic areas, multiple use items like "nesting tables", firm cushioned chairs with sturdy arms, a glider / rocker, a love seat rather than a couch, etc. There is an adapted room on the 1st floor, originally a bedroom, now the "relaxation room" with lots of our sensory items out and about, the closet doors removed and instead large cushions inserted in it making it a sort of nest(!) with low lights and lots of sounds and scents. And, yes, all lights are operated by touch or movement throughout the center. There are steps and an upstairs which is where the actual offices and libraries are located.
